Drone Photography at Nam Seoul University: A Winter Campus Aerial Guide for Photographers Visiting Cheonan, South Korea

Shot 1 — The Eastern Cluster: Warm Brick, Cold Winter Light, and Why You Should Fly Early

The first thing that struck me when I pushed the drone up above the rooftops on this late-January morning was just how warmly the low winter sun painted those red-brick academic buildings. Nam Seoul University sits in a broad valley southeast of Cheonan city center, and in winter the sun stays low all day, which means that golden-hour quality light you normally only get for fifteen minutes actually stretches across most of the morning shoot window. I launched from the parking area near the main gate just after 9 a.m., and the angle of the light at that hour hit the eastern cluster of classroom buildings almost perfectly side-on, pulling out every shadow line between the floors and giving the facades real three-dimensional punch.

For photographers planning a similar shoot, the key compositional move in this angle is letting the forested hillside behind the campus do the work. Those pine-covered ridges, bare and brown in January, create a natural frame that separates the built environment from the sky. I positioned the drone at roughly 60–70 meters AGL (above ground level) and tilted the gimbal to about –20 degrees — just enough to keep the horizon in the upper third while still getting a clean overview of the building footprints, rooftop equipment, and the access roads threading between them. The dormitory blocks with their distinctive blue-paneled facade appear in the upper right of this frame and act as a useful color accent against the otherwise warm palette.

Practical access note: the campus is openly accessible during daylight hours, and in January the student population is thin because Korean universities are typically on winter break between mid-January and late February. That makes this one of the best times to fly — fewer people to worry about, emptier parking lots that don’t clutter your foreground, and no administrative foot traffic to raise eyebrows at a drone pilot. Always notify campus security at the main gate before you launch; in my experience Korean university staff are curious rather than hostile, and a polite conversation beforehand has never once cost me a flight.

Shot 2 — The Campus Spine: Reading the Main Boulevard From 80 Meters Up

Pulling back and repositioning to the south gave me the shot I had mentally pre-visualized before I even drove to the campus: the long central boulevard running north to south through the heart of the university, lined with bare-branched trees and flanked by the main academic buildings on both sides. At this altitude and angle you can read the entire spatial logic of the campus in a single frame — the main road as spine, the buildings as ribs branching off it, the sports fields as a green interruption mid-campus, and the surrounding hills as the natural boundary that gives the whole composition a sense of enclosure and intimacy.

What I love about this wide establishing shot from a photography standpoint is how the construction activity visible in the lower-left corner — earthmovers, fresh-cut soil — actually adds authenticity rather than ruining the image. It tells a story about a campus in active growth, which is very true of many South Korean universities in the mid-2010s. If you are going for a cleaner, more timeless composition you can simply shift the drone laterally about 20 meters east to push that construction zone out of the frame entirely. I chose to keep it in because I was shooting documentary-style that day, capturing the campus as it actually was on 27 January 2016 rather than an idealized version of it.

The large parking lot on the left edge of the frame also tells you something useful as a visiting photographer: there is plenty of space to set up a ground station, lay out your controller, and pre-flight your drone without getting in anyone’s way. The lot services a cluster of buildings that appeared to be engineering or science facilities based on their design language, and in winter break they were almost entirely empty. Cheonan itself is about 20–25 minutes away by bus from this part of the campus, so plan your visit as a half-day minimum — once you have the wide establishing shots done there are plenty of tighter angles worth exploring.

Shot 3 — Golden Hour from the West: How the Haze Became My Best Friend

By early afternoon the atmospheric haze that is almost inevitable in the Korean winter — a mix of domestic humidity and fine dust drifting across from the continent — had thickened enough to turn the distant hills into soft, layered silhouettes. Most photographers curse haze. I have learned to work with it, especially when shooting with a drone, because it creates natural aerial perspective that makes a flat campus layout suddenly feel three-dimensional and painterly. In this third frame I swung the drone around to shoot roughly westward with the low afternoon sun partially behind and to the left of the camera, and the haze did exactly what I hoped: it graduated the background ridgeline from dark green in the near distance to a pale blue-grey further back, giving the image depth that a perfectly clear day would not have provided.

The foreground in this shot contains some of the most architecturally interesting buildings on campus — a multi-story structure with a curved cylindrical element at its base, and what appears to be a student union or administrative hub with a distinctive angular roofline. These are the kinds of architectural details you simply cannot see properly from the ground, and they are one of the strongest arguments I can make for drone photography on a university campus. At street level these buildings just look like big boxes. From 65 meters up their rooftop geometry, the relationship between volumes, and the way footpaths connect them become genuinely interesting.

For the technical settings on this frame I was shooting in D-Log on my camera to preserve highlight detail in the bright sky while retaining shadow information in the shaded north faces of the buildings. The post-processing lift was straightforward: add contrast, pull back the highlights slightly, push the warm tones in the brick facade, and let the haze in the background sit naturally without overcooking the dehaze slider. One common mistake I see in campus aerial photography is over-dehazing to get a sharp background — it makes the foreground buildings look composited in and destroys that beautiful sense of atmospheric depth. Resist the urge.

Shot 4 — Sports Fields and the Campus Grid: The Overhead Angle That Makes Urban Planners Happy

My final repositioning of the day brought me to what I consider the most satisfying compositional anchor on this entire campus: the combination of the red-track sports field and the adjacent blue-green tennis and basketball courts sitting at the geometric heart of the university layout. From directly overhead these surfaces would have made a brilliant abstract color study, but I chose a moderate oblique angle instead — maybe –30 degrees of gimbal tilt — because I wanted to show the relationship between the sports facilities and the surrounding buildings rather than just the surface pattern alone. The result is a frame that works both as a location document and as a piece of aerial composition.

What this angle also reveals is just how thoughtfully the campus was laid out. There is a clear visual axis running from the fountain plaza in the lower right, up through the sports fields, to the central administrative building with its clock tower motif sitting at the head of the main boulevard. That kind of deliberate urban axis — almost classical in its proportions — is surprisingly satisfying to photograph from the air because the drone reveals a design intention that is completely invisible to anyone walking on the ground. The fountain plaza, partially dusted with snow in these January shots, makes a particularly nice foreground element because the circular geometry contrasts with the rectangular grid of the sports courts.

If you are visiting Nam Seoul University specifically to shoot aerial photos, I would structure your day exactly as I did: start on the eastern side to catch the morning side-light on the brick facades, work your way around the perimeter through midday, and finish on the western or southern side to catch the warm late-afternoon backlight with the hills as a backdrop. Winter break (roughly January 15 to February 25 in most years) is genuinely the best window — the campus is quiet, the deciduous trees are bare which opens up sightlines, and the occasional patches of snow on flat rooftops add a graphic element you simply do not get in any other season. Budget about three to four battery cycles for a thorough shoot, and bring a portable charging hub if you want to stay for the afternoon light without heading back to your car between every flight.
